18Road safety barrier systems#

18.1General#

Unless expressly specified otherwise in the project design documentation only road safety barriers / systems and/or end treatments that are assessed and accepted for use on state-controlled roads in Queensland shall be used. Barrier Systems which are accepted for use on state-controlled roads in Queensland are listed in the Department of Transport and Main Roads document Road Safety Barrier Systems and Devices. This document is updated periodically. For information regarding registered suppliers and approved products refer to the departmental website, https://www.tmr.qld.gov.au/business-industry/Business-with-us/Approved-products-and-suppliers. Road safety barriers / systems and end treatments are classified as either 'public domain' or 'proprietary'. Wherever there is scope in the contract for the Contractor to select a product or device the Design Criteria / Performance Standards are specified in Clause 11 of Annexure MRTS14.1.

18.2Public domain road safety barriers and end treatments#

Public domain road safety barriers and road safety barrier end treatments are barrier systems details for which are provided on Department of Transport and Main Roads Standard Drawings. Public domain road safety barriers and road safety barrier end treatments shall be installed in accordance with the Standard Drawings and as shown in and required by the project documentation. Any conflict shall be referred to the contract administrator for determination.

18.3Proprietary road safety barriers and end treatments#

Proprietary road safety barrier systems and road safety barrier end treatments are barrier systems that are subject to intellectual property rights within Australia. Proprietary road safety barrier systems and road safety barrier end treatments shall be installed in accordance with the supplier’s / manufacturer’s installation manual and as shown in and required by the project documentation. Any conflict shall be referred to the contract administrator for determination.

18.4Austroads Safety Hardware Training and Accreditation Scheme (ASHTAS)#

All individuals who directly impact the quality of installation, maintenance or repair of permanent road safety barriers and end treatments must hold a current ASHTAS Operative accreditation. Transport and Main Roads recognises that some practitioners may be unable to complete the Operative Course initially. Therefore, a grace period extending until 31 December 2024 is being provided for extraordinary circumstances. To apply for this extension, practitioners must submit a written rationale to the Transport and Main Roads project sponsor or asset owner for evaluation.
