22Tactile ground surface indicators (TGSI)#

22.1Supply of compliant products#

The department maintains a list of registered products used for TGSI. The products listed on this register have been assessed and determined as being compliant to AS/NZS 1428.4.1 and other criteria as determined by Transport and Main Roads.

Only registered products listed on the Compliant Products Register for Tactile Ground Surface Indicators (TGSI) shall be used, and any conditions of registration listed on the register (including usage limitations) must be complied with.

At least 14 days before placement of TGSI, the Contractor shall submit to the Administrator:

  • details of the registered product, and
  • construction procedure to be used.

Milestone

The construction procedure to be used for the Works shall be consistent with:

  • the manufacturer’s current recommendations, and
  • the requirements of the manufacturer’s warranty.

22.2Installation#

22.2.1Test methods#

The standard test methods given in Table 4 shall be used in this Technical Specification. Further details of test numbers and test descriptions are given in Clause 4 of MRTS01 Introduction to Technical Specifications.

22.2.2Testing frequencies#

The minimum testing frequencies for coloured surface treatments are given in Table 22.2.

22.2.3Maximum lot size#

A lot shall consist of an area of work that is constructed using a single batch of TGSI and with the TGSI being placed on the same surface material with similar colour.

22.2.4General#

The installation of the TGSI shall be as specified on the drawings and shall occur in accordance with the approved product’s instructions as provided by the manufacturer, such that the installation is subject to any and all warranty conditions imposed by the supplier and/or manufacturer.

Where the design is provided by the Principal, any conflict between the design documentation and the supplier’s requirements shall be referred to the Administrator for resolution prior to commencement of installation.

22.2.5Alignment#

TGSI shall be set out to align correctly at the pedestrian crossing location so as to correctly direct the pedestrian, where applicable. Hold Point 14

22.2.6Surface preparation#

In accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation the surface shall be cleaned and prepared for the installation of the TGSI. Witness Point 5

22.2.7Installation#

TGSI shall be installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendation. The base surface of an integrated directional TGSI shall be not more than 3 mm above the abutment surface of the surrounding floor or ground surface.

22.3Protection of work#

The Contractor shall take all necessary precautions to protect the work from damage and/or contamination, until such time that the new TGSI has developed sufficient strength to carry normal traffic without damage.

22.4Quality records#

The Contractor shall provide the Administrator a copy of the product warranty. The warranty shall be for five years from the date of installation and shall not include any exemptions which would void the warranty due to UV exposure. Milestone

22.5TGSI removal#

The removal of existing TGSI shall be performed immediately prior to the re-installation of replacement TGSI where applicable, subject to any minimum waiting periods that may be required for surface preparation.

The Contractors chosen method of removal will be such that any impact on surrounding infrastructure is minimised, and all affected infrastructure will be restored to a like for like condition upon completion of the Works.

22.6Placed concrete#

Concrete work shall be in accordance with the requirements of MRTS70 Concrete. Steel reinforcing shall be in accordance with the requirements of MRTS71 Reinforcing Steel.

22.7Traffic management#

Appropriate traffic management requirements shall be identified by the Contractor and undertaken in accordance with MRTS02 Provision for Traffic.
