6.9Surge protection device test waveforms#

Standard waveforms representing transients in the electricity supply and used for testing SPDs are a combination of a 1.2 / 50 µs 6 kV voltage and an 8 / 20 µs 3kA current impulse having the following shapes:

The IEC and IEEE standards both have a 10 / 350 µs waveshape current impulse for service entry SPDs.

A 10 / 700 µs open circuit voltage waveform and 5 / 300 µs short circuit current waveform are often used for telecommunications SPDs.
